Chandrapur district was established by the Gond king Khankya Ballarshah in the 13th century. And Chandrapur district was the capital of the Gond kingdom at that time. At that time it was known as Chandagad and it is also called Chanda Chandrapur district was created by the Government of Maharashtra on 11 January 1964 after the independence of India.
The reason why Chandrapur district is known as the black gold city in today's new age is the mineral wealth that Chandrapur district has got. Chandrapur district has the highest coal mining in Maharashtra and is known as Black Gold City.
